The Comparative Media Studies program is proud to include on its staff and faculty a number of individuals who are, as one might say, "in the know." In this section of our site, we'd like to share with our students and visitors some of our academic, cultural, intellectual and not-so-intellectual favorites, culled from our own CMS Graduate Student Handbook. (Your mileage may vary.)

MITAC

MITAC is a non-profit employee service that serves the cultural and recreational needs of the MIT Community. Begun as a pilot program in 1983 with a six-month test trial of 13 special events, MITAC now offers dozens of events annually to the MIT Community. The MITAC Committee (staffed by volunteers of campus and Lincoln Laboratory employees and retirees) meet during the academic year to research and plan special events. Everything from hayrides to sleigh rides, shopping sprees to ski getaways, white water rafting to whale watching, as well as various sporting events (Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics games!), exhibitions (flower shows, RV camping shows, car shows, home shows, boat shows...), circuses, theater, music and other popular events are offered year round and are listed in a Monthly Flyer distributed to employees on campus and at Lincoln Laboratory.

MITAC is located in the lobby of the Stata Center and they are open Tuesday - Friday from 11:00 am-4:00 pm 617.253.7990.

WMBR

WMBR is the MIT campus radio station. We broadcast on 88.1 FM between 20 and 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. We transmit at 720 watts, effective radiated power from the top of the Eastgate Building in Kendall Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our offices and studios are located on the MIT campus in the basement of the Walker Memorial Building at 142 Memorial Drive. Our programming includes a wide range of music shows, public affairs programs and eclectic audio entertainment. Want to join? Speak to Generoso in 14N-207.

LSC (Lecture Series Committee)

The MIT Lecture Series Committee has been bringing quality entertainment to the MIT campus since 1944. In 1950 our popular film program began. Over the years, we have kept at the forefront of cinema technology, featuring four-track magnetic surround sound when monaural sound was the norm. Thus was born the phrase "IN STEREO!" - one of many LSC-related in-jokes in the MIT community (come to an LSC movie and find out why).

Today, LSC features 35mm motion picture projection and 6-track DTS and Dolby Digital surround sound, with 7000 watts of amplification. Over 900 students attend our movies each week - a diverse selection of Hollywood blockbusters, foreign and independent film, and the best of classic cinema, many from splendid and rare archival prints.

From time to time, LSC also features special events such as the Science Fiction Marathon, sneak previews of films not yet released to theaters, lectures by famous personalities, concerts, and more.

MISTI (MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives)

MISTI offers tailored, hands-on internships abroad for MIT students, study abroad opportunities, short-term workshops and language courses abroad, and funding for collaborative research between MIT faculty and international colleagues. For more information, please visit http://web.mit.edu/misti.

New Media Center

The New Media Center (NMC) provides the MIT community the tools necessary to produce multimedia projects, such as digital video, photo scanning and manipulation, web authoring, and more. The NMC is a "do-it-yourself" cluster of Macintosh computers with a variety of multimedia software packages. The door code is 96701 and it is open 24/7.

Annual Parties of Note

Annual party held at Senior House, an undergrad dormitory. The party takes place on the first weekend of May and is the biggest MIT alumni event, and has been running since the 60s. The festivities run all weekend, including live bands on both Friday and Saturday night, a feast on Saturday and the lighting of the fire pit at 5PM on Friday.
