Examines both traditional and contemporary forms of performance, in a variety of genres, with particular attention to gender issues. Explores the communicative power of performances with attention to the ways performers, media, cultural settings, and audiences interact. Considers ways in which representation of cultural difference is altered through processes of globalization. Performances viewed live when possible, but also relies on video, audio, and online materials. Taught in English. 21F.595 is for students pursuing a minor in Japanese.
